New Year in Ukraine and a Ukrainian Style Feast

The new year in Ukraine is a very special time. It is a time for family, love and celebrations—all the aspects that make Ukrainian people very special.

Ukrainians celebrating the new year

Our friends and partners, Edward and Aurelia, from San Diego, sent their New Year wishes and photos of a traditional Ukrainian New Year feast that they were about to enjoy.

Magnificently prepared, the food is presented with love and pride. The decorations that adorn not only the table but the room as a whole show how special this time of the year really is. Even though Aurelia married Edward and moved to the USA, her Ukrainian roots and special qualities never left.

We wish Edward and Aurelia, and their family, a happy, joyful and successful new year.

Aurelia has also sent me photos of the Ukrainian Christmas cake that they will enjoy.

Ukrainian Christmas is actually celebrated on January 7. This is because many Ukrainian traditions are based on pre-Christian pagan customs.

Ukrainians use two calendars at the same time! Orthodox Church life is based on the Gregorian calendar, and everyday life is based on the Julian calendar. So, while Christmas is still on December 25 in the Julian calendar, it appears on January 7 in the Gregorian calendar.

It’s never too late to send love to your special lady. Send your Christmas congratulations and best wishes to her now as she celebrates Ukrainian Christmas and the traditional New Year with her family.
